Basic Instinct is one of my favourite movies, and it is one that will never fail to disappoint in either storyline or through the journey it takes you on.
Firstly, the deep red ‘BASIC’ looks like blood, like the main theme of murder, the catalytic event to start the ball rolling. The ‘I’ in INSTINCT is like a knife, or sharp instrument(an ice pick). Just by this alone we can indicate the possible genres or a horror, and a thriller.
The tag line ‘A brutal murder. A brilliant killer. A cop who can’t resist’ explains the storyline in three sentences. Automatically we can tell it will be a thriller. Then above the tag line is the image of Michael Doyglas and Sharon Stone in a tight embrace bring it all together. She is digging her nails into him, which symbolises the idea of the ‘I’ being the ice pick, and his possible impending doom. The colouring is tinted blue which symbolises the cold nature of the key character.
We can automatically see the clues and piece them together and classify this movie as a thriller. However simple, we can see the elements of thriller through the tag line, specifically, the colouring.
